HISTORIAN'S NOTES ON-LINE

Welcome to Historian’s Notes On-line:  written by Dennis Frost.

Dennis Frost has been the L.E. Velo Club’s Historian for nearly 40 years, and has written extensively about Velocette’s post-war lightweight models.

His first L.E. was bought for £12.10s in the late 1960s – a machine he still owns – and was ridden to the Hall Green factory at the invitation of the firm’s service manager, Bill Sewell. Dennis went on to become friends with many of Velocette’s controlling Goodman family and also notably with their onetime chief designer, Charles Udall.

Dennis is the curator of arguably the largest archive devoted to a single UK motorcycle manufacturer. The Club’s Velocette Archive contains over 10,000 items, ranging from machine production records and thousands of engineering drawings, to internal memoranda, accounts and managerial information.

In the 1990s Dennis worked at the UK’s leading motorcycle enthusiasts’ magazine, The Classic Motorcycle, where he rode and wrote about marques from Adler to Zundapp. He continues to contribute to many publications including Classic Bike and Old Bike Mart and heads the team of concours judges at the UK’s leading classic motorcycle shows held each year at the Staffordshire County Showground.

By profession, Dennis is a senior civil servant who works with and advises elected politicians. He says that riding a motorcycle is often the best way to ponder solutions to the problems his political masters set him.
